Kissin' impossible!

We’ve never enjoyed watching a couple fight as much as in Kissin’ Impossible at the Schmidt Theater! Michael and Jennifer Ehnert — a real-life married couple — deliver performances that are both cinematic and deeply moving. No costumes, no elaborate props — just razor-sharp acting and a wealth of comic talent.

The play begins in the waiting room of a divorce lawyer and ends with a kiss. In between, no topic is off-limits: from best friends and holiday destinations to bedroom squabbles and everyday annoyances. It’s bold without ever being dull or tasteless. The result: a marital battlefield that keeps you laughing and engaged right up to the final moment. ★★★★★

A Married Couple Fall Victim to Their Own Perceptions

Michael and Jennifer Ehnert bring startling clarity to the question of modern love — with performances that combine brilliance, boldness, and just a touch of madness.

At first, things seem simple enough: the two sit in a divorce court, eager to end their marriage as quickly as possible. But we soon learn they first met on a TV series where they played a hard-nosed cop and a sharp journalist who fall in love. These stock characters morph into the “dream couple” Michael and Jennifer wish they could be. As scenes from the series spill into the present, the boundary between fiction and reality collapses until even they can’t tell: are they lovers on screen, or a couple in real life?

The result is both hilarious and unsettling. One moment we’re swept up in choreographed chase scenes, the next we’re plunged into absurd yet pointed debates about gender equality. The Ehnerts perform with such honesty and comic timing that bursts of laughter and spontaneous applause ripple through the audience — prompting Michael at one point to joke, “Should we call an ambulance?!”

Kissin’ Impossible is a roller-coaster portrait of love, marriage, and the blurred lines between performance and reality.

Final Showdown: Divorce Court

Audiences can’t stop giving standing ovations to this profound, sharply comic, and brilliantly acted play. Kissin’ Impossible — written and performed by Michael and Jennifer Ehnert — was a highlight of this year’s Satirica Festival, and one that will be hard to top.

What unfolds is a dazzling battle of wits and wills, where the couple spar with equal skill both verbally and physically. This is theatre of the highest caliber. And we can only hope there will be a sequel to Kissin’ Impossible soon.

A Tour de Force Battle of the Sexes Where Sparks Fly

Behind the sparring characters of this multi-layered play stand Jennifer and Michael Ehnert — two equally gifted actors and a real-life couple. After a few years of marriage, worn down by the grind of everyday life, they find themselves facing a divorce court appointment in just two hours.

Smartly integrated film elements — the deafening crack of gunfire, the flash of lightning — act as a third character in this expertly crafted production. And the final Hollywood-style kiss, set against a backdrop of punchlines, research insights, and stage effects directed by Martin Blau, can’t disguise that these two are teetering on the edge of the abyss. And that’s entertainment!

No Relationship GPS in Sight

Ehnert vs. Ehnert avoids the tired clichés of male–female stereotypes and shows what a modern relationship really looks like: a battlefield where each defends their own truth.

We’ve all seen comedians walk this path before, but this married couple brings a unique and refreshing style to the discussion of gender roles — sometimes sparring playfully, sometimes clashing with real intensity.

Kissin’ Impossible is nothing short of thrilling. Clever acoustic and visual effects heighten the suspense and showcase the immense talent of the actor–playwright duo behind the show. And in the end, despite it all, the couple still manages to share their Hollywood kiss.

Action-Comedy as a War of the Roses

Blue lights flicker, helicopters roar, bullets fly — and the audience gets a taste of a brand-new stage genre: the action-comedy. Everyday dialogue is punctuated with sound effects usually reserved for the big screen.

That’s why the Ehnerts call their program Kissin’ Impossible — a playful nod to Hollywood blockbusters. And indeed, there’s no shortage of action: SWAT teams storm in, shots ring out, and our couple always manages to find a last-second escape worthy of James Bond. The Ehnerts undercut the spectacle with ironic slow-motion stagings and running gags straight out of Tom and Jerry.

Ehnert vs. Ehnert is nearly as thrilling as Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
